 SACRED MUSIC IN SICILY IN THE 16TH AND 17TH CENTURIES  

4th performing practice internship held

The Ludus Orionis Association, in collaboration with the Archdiocese of Messina, Lipari and S. Lucia del Mela and the Municipality of Messina, is sponsoring a summer internship, entitled Sacred Music in Sicily in the 16th and 17th Centuries. It aims to deepen and spread the knowledge of the Sicilian Renaissance and Baroque sacred repertoire and to promote and encourage its performance. The internship, now in its fourth edition, offers members the opportunity to perfect their technical and interpretative preparation with internationally renowned artists and to participate in the study and performance of the pieces chosen for a final concert, which will be held in the Cathedral of Messina. This year, the subject of the internship will be a Mass for 5 voices and basso continuo and a Hymn for 8 voices, 2 violas and continuo by Vincenzo Tozzi, a Roman-born composer who served as maestro di cappella of Messina Cathedral from 1639 to 1675, as well as a selection of motets by composers active in contemporary Sicilian chapels. The scores covered by the internship are mainly unpublished first modern performances.
